Mammut is a magazine dedicated to exploring all forms of creative production that have a relationship with nature, landscape and environmentalism—or what we call ecological aesthetics. Featuring scholarly investigations, reports on current discussions and debates, and artist’s projects, Mammut is a sourcebook for readers seeking to understand the intersection of art and nature.

For our fifth issue of Mammut, we borrowed the title of the 2010 Gorillaz song Some Kind of Nature as a theme to investigate our ongoing interest in art and nature. Both terms are so broad as be almost indefinable and this opens up a lot of terrain for investigation, imagination and reflection on the meaning of the words and what role art can play in our relationship with processes of the world.

The fourth issue investigates the effects of climate change on the human psyche, focusing on a new definition of sadness called "solastalgia." Coined by Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht, who also contributed to this issues of Mammut, the term refers to a form of homesickness felt while still at home. A parallel of sorts to nostalgia, the word solastalgia was created by combining the Latin words solacium, meaning comfort, and algia, meaning pain.

The third issue focuses on megafauna, a term that loosely applies to large mammals including the namesake of this magazine, the American mastodon. We asked contributors to offer a personal perspective on megafauana and how they are represented, used as symbols, or offer a way to understand our own lives.

As the world's population is increasingly concentrated in urban centers, how we choose to interact, develop and live in these cities will only become more important.
